     Area of responsibility

The Third Regional Health and Welfare System of Attica (3rd Re.He.We.S) is a Legal Entity of public interest based in Piraeus, under the Ministry's of Health and Welfare supervision. It was founded in 2001 according to the 2889 regulation, which was approved in the context of the "Health for the Citizen" reformative program and aims at modernising the National Health System.
Its Mission is the advancement, preservation and improvement of public health in its area of jurisdiction and the support of an accessible, responsible and integrated Health System.
In the context of this mission, the 3rd Re.He.We.S of Attica deals with the specialization, supervision and implementation of Health Policy in the area under its responsibility. All Health units based in Municipality of Piraeus (including Kithira and the Argosaronikos islands), in West Athens (Moschato, Ag. Anargyroi, Aigaleo, Ag. Varvara, Haedari, Peristeri, Petroupoli, Ilion, Camatero), and in West Attica (Ano Liosia, Elefsina, Thriasio, Megarida) are under its jurisdiction.
This geographic area may be said to be quite uneven. The population served by the 3rd Re.He.We.S of Attica -which is estimated to be approximately one million five hundred thousand people- is dominated by social groups of lower income. Moreover, moving populations as well as immigrants play an important social role.

Eight NHS hospitals which operate as decentralized units that maintain economic and management independency, five Health Centres, and fourteen Regional Infirmaries reside under the 3rd Re.He.We.S. Moreover, the Psychiatric Hospital "Dromokaetio" is operationally linked with the 3rd Regional Health and Welfare System of Attica but maintains its own, separate legal identity.

In this network of health units, there around 4.200 beds available and approximately 7.500 professionals of various specialisations and from diversified sectors employed.
With the 3106/2002 regulation, the responsibilities of the 3rd Re.He.We.S were expanded to include Welfare policy issues as well.
